WHAT THIS IS
The Borough of Before is a town that keeps ledgers of the not-yet. Its Clerk doesn't archive failures — he safeguards the roads no foot has walked, the weather that never fell, the fourth wall never framed, filing them all under one quiet double stamp: Still There, and Temporarily Elsewhere.
A man called Maybe moves the wrong cloud — the one that fits the ridge exactly and has never been drawn. The Borough answers with permits, measurements, and carbon-copy grief. Old Man Cantellation preaches endless expansion: every edge is another opening, and a shape that learns to open never learns to close. Thirty is polite but won't hold the light. Ninety opens so far it traps its own last beam. The Sixty Sisters arrive with tape measures and five plain rules — sight-line, scale, outline, see-through, and repair — and build the thing that's finally enough. Then the Borough claims it, brands it, begins to speak for it, and a second shadow appears beneath the public triumph.
Underneath the fable runs the real question, the one the whole cycle turns on: once the rules are set, does discovering something make it — or was it already there, waiting, whether or not anyone ever built it? The work stops. The counting doesn't. The lamp stays on beside the ledger.
THE TRILOGY
First panel of a triptych, one inquiry told three times:
• 60 SQUARE SPHERE — creation (is the unbuilt real?)
• DOMES ALL THE WAY UP — knowing (can we reach the bottom of the real?)
• THE CITY OF RECORD — power (who decides what stays real?)
All three share a spine-phrase — "still there / temporarily elsewhere" — and a closing line: the work terminates; the procedure does not.
